New Zealand born, Margaret Needham has variously been a secondary school teacher, counsellor, psychotherapist, radio and TV co-host. After her family left home, she and her husband relocated to a lifestyle block north of Auckland. Here the opportunity to paint presented itself. Surrounded by farm animals, hills, bush and streams, Margaret is able to explore in paint the delights of a natural environment and her fascination with the quality of NZ light. Rural life and beaches are currently the inspirations for her work.

Painting in Italy

Margaret also regularly travels to Italy to paint the Mediterranean light and its remarkable landscapes. She captures the variety of colour found in the Italian landscape, painting in a historical setting where artists have painted for centuries.

Painting en plein air, a simple painting palette allows her to concentrate on the ever-changing light and gives her the freedom to express her feelings about the subjects she puts onto canvas. She has been developing her palette to include burnt umber, raw sienna, yellow ochre and cobalt blue. She uses this palette to express the colours and people of the land and the dappling of light and shade. Margaret enjoys the tranquility of painting en plein air and being visited by friendly local villagers who are keen to see the paintings as they develop.

The Italian paintings can be seen on this website, with an exhibition expected. Please check this page regularly for news and updates.

Margaret has had paintings exhibited in Off the Beach Gallery, Maraetai and Arts Desire Gallery,Warkworth. Her paintings have also sold at Art in the Woolshed, Tawharanui, and at exhibitions in Rodney. Several paintings can be found in private collections in NZ, Italy and England.
