Fish and Chips 60x20cm

While looking at fish in the supermarket, I thought it would be fun to make a painting about ingredients. Living in Britain, I just had to make a painting about fish and chips. It features a potato, a lemon, a fish (a trout as they look wonderful) and, to add a bit more interest and a vertical element, a jar of pickled chillies.

I have approached this painting by first setting up a grisaille so I could establish value relationships and get the composition right. The great thing about this is is that the bulk of the painting is already done, as getting the values right is the key to a satisfactory painting. I have started to add colour in the next stage, with more work to do to pull the painting together. Lights and darks could for example be connected better. I also have to consider omitting some of the yellows. A painting is always in motion.

Pelican 8x8"

I often have a 'bird canvas' on the side to work on in between painting my landscapes and still lifes. I've always enjoyed painting birds and find working on a very detailed level relaxing. I saw the pelican during a walk with my family in St James's Park in central London at christmas time 2007. Fantastic birds!
Puffin Study 8x10"

This study of a puffin is now finished. I bought the gold wooden frame at The Frame Factory in Belsize Park, London, which is just perfect.
Richmond 8x10"
Now we are living in London I have access to great musea and exhibitions, here but also in Europe. Influenced by Monet's Zaandam paintings which I saw at the Musee d'Orsay, I tried to do something similar with a view down the Thames in Richmond. This painting needs a lot more work first.
